Reality Check: How much drinking is going on?

Many kids in middle school (and older people for that matter) don’t have the real story. Take this quiz--based on a new national survey--for a reality check about drinking in the United States.

It might surprise you.

The quiz has three questions, and each question has three answer choices.

  1. How many 12- or 13-year-olds drank alcohol in the past month? On average:

    • Very few: Fewer than 1 out of 10
    • Half: 5 out of 10
    • Most : 9 out of 10

The correct answer is: “Very few: Fewer than 1 out of 10.” So MOST—more than 9 out of 10—did not. (It’s actually 98%—almost all did NOT drink!)

  2. Among kids ages 12 to 17, how many drank alcohol in the past month? On average:

    • Very few: About 1 out of 10
    • Half: 5 out of 10
    • Most: 8 out of 10

The correct answer is: “Very few: About 1 out of 10.” So MOST—nearly 9 out of 10—did not.

  3. How many adults aged 35 and older drank alcohol in the past month? On average:

    • A few: 2 out of 10
    • About Half: 5 out of 10
    • Most: 8 out of 10

The correct answer is “About Half: 5 out of 10.” So nearly HALF of adults ages 35 and up drank less recently or not at all.

The final frame reads: “Get it? If you choose not to drink, you’re not alone.”
